What should I expect from my first physiotherapy visit?
Generally your first visit will take up to one hour. Your physiotherapist will start with a detailed history, including listening to your major concerns, ask an overview of your general health, and discuss your personal goals. Your therapist will perform a detailed physical assessment in order to determine the cause of your major concern. Once the assessment is complete your therapist will provide you with education on the nature of the injury and the best course of treatment to meet your goals. Your first treatment is included in the initial assessment.
What do I need for my first physiotherapy visit?
If possible Please complete the physiotherapy patient intake form on line prior to your first visit. Please bring proper identification, your Alberta Health services card, and or your extended health care plan information if you are requesting direct billing, and any applicable claim/policy numbers. Please wear clothing that is comfortable to move in, and that will allow the physiotherapist access to the affected body site. Please wear clean, indoor footwear.
Do I need a doctors referral?
No you do NOT need a doctors referral. Although on the rare occasion some insurance providers may require a referral for reimbursement. Physiotherapists are direct access health care professionals that are qualified to assess, diagnose and treat a wide variety of conditions. We are trained to recognize signs/symptoms that may be out of our scope of practice that would require you to see a physician.
Can I use my extended health benefits?
Yes! Most extended health benefits will cover physical therapy. Please contact your provider directly to determine the amount of your available coverage. We direct bill many insurance providers.
Is physiotherapy covered by Alberta Health care?
Unfortunately no. At this time Alberta Health services has not issued any new contracts to physiotherapy clinics since 2011, and opportunities to potentially receive a contract will not be possible until September 2019.
My injury is the result of a motor vehicle accident, what do I do?
In Alberta if you were injured in a motor vehicle accident (MVA) regardless of fault, you can access benefits coverage. This is based on the extent of your injuries.
If your accident was less than 10 days ago, you must complete an AB-1 form and send it to your car insurance company. Once you receive an approval, including a policy/claim number and adjuster’s information, you will then be considered “In protocol” and you will likely not have to pay for your assessment/treatments.
If your accident was more than 10 days ago, you may be considered “out of protocol” which is not a major concern, however you must contact your insurance company before you make your physiotherapy appointment to ensure your coverage.
We will be happy to assist you will any questions with regards to this process.
